Have a Great Trip.

The Science of Safer, Smarter Psychedelic Experiences

A bad trip is not bad luck. It happens when what comes up is bigger than the capacity you have to meet it. In 55 minutes I show you how to build that capacity before you ever sit in ceremony.

What you will learn

  • What actually turns a hard moment into a bad trip: when what comes up is bigger than your capacity to meet it, and why resistance is what makes it worse.
  • Two kinds of safety, inner (“I’ve got this”) and outer (“I’m not alone in here”), and the four skills that build them: curiosity, compassion, courage and connection.
  • A short practice for connection you can try with a friend, starting from “In this moment, I am…”
  • One question, “What’s that like?”, and how it helped a retreat participant move through a moment he was sure was a panic attack.
  • Why the process matters more than the content, and what you carry home after the medicine.
Who it is for

Made for people who want to prepare.

  • You are thinking about a psychedelic experience and want to prepare well.
  • You have had a hard experience and want to understand what happened.
  • You support someone who is preparing, and want to know how to help.

This is education, not medical advice.

Your teacher

Austin Mao, founder.

Austin is a licensed Colorado natural medicine facilitator and the founder of Ceremonia. His own path began in 2020 at an ayahuasca retreat he joined thinking it was a networking opportunity. He has spent the years since learning that the ceremony is only part of the work. The container around it, before and after, is the rest.

From the recording

A few moments from the hour.

  • A slide reading, A bad trip happens when the trigger is bigger than your capacity, beside two bar charts comparing trigger and capacity. Austin Mao speaks in a small camera window at the top right.
Not bad: when the trigger is bigger than your capacity.
  • A slide reading, Love equals safety plus joy, beside a wheel of emotions. Austin Mao speaks in a small camera window at the top right.
    Love is safety plus joy.
  • A slide reading, Feel safe inside and out, listing self-empowerment, connection, and four skills to practice: curiosity, compassion, courage, and connection. Austin Mao smiles in a small camera window at the top right.
Good: feeling safe inside and out.
  • A slide reading, A great trip changes the rest of your life, with the question, What's that like? Austin Mao speaks in a small camera window at the top right.
Great: the question, What’s that like?
